Application of Pollen Germination Media on Stigmas during Pollination Increases Seed Set in East African Highland Cooking Bananas (Musa spp.)

چکیده
Seed set in East African Highland Cooking bananas (EAHBs) is extremely low and therefore hampers breeding. Pollen–pistil interaction a key contributing factor. We assessed the effect of pollen germination media (PGM) on seed EAHBs. Five EAHB cultivars were pollinated with from wild banana ‘Calcutta 4’. Glucose-based PGM sprayed freshly emerged stigmas significantly increased per 100 fruits bunch. Increases 73.5% ‘Enzirabahima’, 39.9% ‘Mshale’, 302.4% ‘Nshonowa’. However, did not increase female sterile ‘Mlelembo’ ‘Nakitembe’. As larger bunches more fertile, good field management practices are also recommended to get improve breeding efficiency.

Genetic Diversity in Bananas and Plantains (Musa spp.)
Bananas and plantains belong to the family Musaceae and are cultivated throughout the humid tropics and sub-tropics. This crop is perennial with a faster relative growth rate compared to other fruit crops, while producing fruit all year round. Because of their nutritional value, bananas and plantains are considered the fourth most important crop worldwide after rice, wheat and corn. In many cou...

Different experiments have showed that interruption in pollination is an important problem in most almond orchards.Asmost of the almond cultivars are self-incompatible,pollination cannot be performed desirably and as a result a failure in almond yield is occurred. Thus under this circumstance, determination of selective cultivars compatibility and choosing appropriate pollinizers are so important...
متن کاملPollen Germinability and Cross-Pollination Success in Persian Cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum Mill.)
Low seed yield is a limiting factor for cross breeding and hybrid seed production in cyclamen. This study was performed to investigate pollen germination and its relation to cross-pollination success and fruit set in this plant. In order to achieve a high level of pollen germination, the effect of different concentrations of chemical compounds were examined on in vitro pollen germination of cyc...
متن کاملExpressed Centromere Specific Histone 3 (CENH3) Variants in Cultivated Triploid and Wild Diploid Bananas (Musa spp.)
Centromeres are specified by a centromere specific histone 3 (CENH3) protein, which exists in a complex environment, interacting with conserved proteins and rapidly evolving satellite DNA sequences. The interactions may become more challenging if multiple CENH3 versions are introduced into the zygote as this can affect post-zygotic mitosis and ultimately sexual reproduction. Here, we characteri...
